The volume presents a collection of studies by internationally acknowledged medievalists on the phenomenon of laughter and its literary, social and emotional functions in the Middle Ages. The papers investigate the forms and representations of laughter in medieval literature and society and inquire into its role in the creation of communities and the depiction of figures in fictional texts.

Raum- und Zeitstrukturen sind zentrale Gestaltungselemente mittelalterlicher Erzählungen, insbesondere der großen höfischen Romane. Dieses Buch führt auf der Basis moderner narratologischer Theorien in die Poetik epischer Texte des Mittelalters ein und bietet damit Grundlagen für die selbständige Analyse vormoderner Erzählstrukturen. Die Einführung nimmt ihren Ausgang von Zeit- und Raumtheorien der Antike und des Mittelalters und erläutert u. a. die Konzepte Aristoteles', Platons und Augustinus'. Auf diesem geistesgeschichtlichen Fundament aufbauend, erklärt sie dann die Charakteristika der fiktiven Geographie mittelalterlicher Texte und ihrer stark von den Lehren der Rhetorik und den Topoi der abendländischen Tradition geprägten Landschaftsentwürfe. Eine besondere Bedeutung kommt dabei u. a. der Darstellung des ,âventiure-Weges' des Artusritters zu. Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt bildet die Einführung in chronologische Konzeptionen mittelalterlicher Erzähltexte, die z. B. oftmals von einer teleologischen Handlungsführung bestimmt werden. Auch die natürlichen ,Zeiten' (Sommer - Winter) und religiösen Gliederungsprinzipien (christliche Heilszeit) und ihre Bedeutung für die mittelalterliche Literatur werden erläutert. Weitere Themen sind spezielle Chronotopoi, etwa die ,Rechtzeitige Rettung', Phänomene der Kontingenz in der Handlungsmotivation und die Motivik des die Gesetze der Zeitlichkeit aufhebenden Wunderbaren. Mittels der Kategorien ,Raum' und ,Zeit' erschließt diese Einführung auf verständliche Weise zentrale Phänomene und Begriffe der mittelalterlichen Erzählliteratur und eignet sich daher insbesondere für Studenten der mediävistischen Literaturwissenschaft hervorragend als Seminarlektüre oder für das Selbststudium.

This interdisciplinary collection, which brings together new research on a range of patristic and medieval texts and visual materials, sets the cultural transformation of early medieval Ireland and Britain in the context of these islands’ inheritance from late antiquity and their engagement with the wider medieval world. It testifies to the imaginative ways in which scholars and artists assimilated and creatively re-interpreted the Christian and Mediterranean culture they encountered through the coming of Christianity, a central theme in the work of Dr Jennifer O’Reilly, whose contribution to scholarship the volume honours. The book is divided into three sections. The first section, ‘Inheritance and Transmission’ sets the scene with contributions examining the interplay of classical and Christian ideas in late antique texts; early medieval Irish, English and continental responses to patristic themes in text and manuscript; cultural and political links between Ireland, Britain, and the continent. The second section, ‘Monasticism in the Age of Bede’ focuses initially on Bede as heresiologist, exegete, martyrologist, and historian, addressing issues that include orthodoxy, the cult of saints, church reform, and the representation of women. The section’s later papers continue these themes: Anglo-Saxon views of conception and birth, the Irish and English cult of St Gregory the Great, and the understanding of scripture in Adomnán’s Life of Columba. The third section, ‘Exegesis and the language of Pictures’, explores the visual representation of scriptural exegesis in Insular sculpture and illuminated manuscripts. Papers investigate representations of secular and sacred figures in art, ideals of beauty, and the meaning and symbolism of artworks including the Ruthwell cross and the Book of Kells.
